About

Aikido of Sebastopol is dedicated to preserving and transmitting traditional Iwama-style Aikido as taught by Morihiro Saito Sensei. Our dojo emphasizes strong basics, clear structure, sincere training, and a supportive environment for all levels.

What Is Aikido?

Aikido is a Japanese martial art focused on blending with an attack rather than meeting force with force. Using timing, posture, and precise movement, practitioners redirect energy to neutralize aggression safely and efficiently. Training includes empty-hand techniques, weapons work, and exercises that build balance, awareness, and calm. Aikido is non-competitive and suitable for adults of all ages, offering a path to physical skill, personal growth, and centered living.

Dojo Culture & Etiquette

Our dojo follows traditional, respectful Aikido culture designed to create a safe and focused learning environment. Students bow when entering and leaving the mat, maintain a clean uniform, arrive on time, and help keep the space tidy. Training is cooperative, not competitive—partners work together to learn, not to “win.” Courtesy, attentiveness, and humility guide every interaction. We welcome adults of all backgrounds and encourage a calm, supportive atmosphere where everyone can grow at their own pace.

Lineage & Philosophy

Aikido of Sebastopol practices the Iwama style, rooted in the teachings of Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba (O-Sensei) and preserved by his long-time student Morihiro Saitō Shihan. This lineage emphasizes clear fundamentals, weapons integration, and a grounded, technical approach. Philosophically, Aikido seeks harmony—using skill and awareness to resolve conflict without unnecessary harm. Training cultivates balance, presence, and a deeper sense of connection with oneself and others.
